Great Wall of China at sunset — teaching opportunities in China China
London Thames skyline at dusk — teaching opportunities in the United Kingdom United Kingdom

Different requirements.
Same opportunity.

China and the UK are not the Middle East. These are career-building markets with different entry points, different visa processes, and different expectations. Read both — then decide which suits where you are right now.

Valid passport

Not package-driven.
Career-driven.

The Middle East offers tax-free packages with flights, accommodation, and medical cover bundled in. China and the UK work differently. Here is what to expect.

Airfare

You arrange your own travel.

Unlike Middle East placements where return airfare is typically included, teachers heading to China or the UK arrange and fund their own flights. This is standard for both markets and is factored into the overall opportunity.

Accommodation

Not always provided.

UK teachers find their own housing — though salaries reflect this. China varies by school: some provide accommodation, others offer a housing allowance. Details are confirmed before you accept any position.

Tax

Different tax positions.

The UK is taxed normally — but with NHS, pension, and a clear career ladder factored in. China has tax treaties that can be favourable depending on your situation. Neither market is tax-free like the Gulf.

The trade-off

Long-term career value.

The Middle East gives you a package. China gives you a low-barrier entry point to international experience. The UK gives you a permanent career abroad. Different stages, different goals — all valid.

These are career-building markets, not package-driven markets. If you are looking for a bundled tax-free package with flights and accommodation included, the Middle East is the better fit. If you are looking to start your international career or build a permanent life abroad, China and the UK are where to look.

Five steps.
We handle most of them.

The process can feel complex from the outside. It is not. We have been doing this for over 30 years and every step is familiar to us. We stay with you through all of them.

1

Submit your CV

Tell us who you are, what you teach, and where you are open to going. You can apply before you graduate — any offer will be conditional on your qualification being in hand.

2

Pre-interview

Selected candidates are invited to a personal interview — in person or online. Only those with a strong match are contacted. Your employment, qualifications, and background are verified by our team.

3

School matching

We forward your profile to schools that are the right fit. Not every school — the right ones. Friends may apply together, though placement at the same school cannot be guaranteed.

4

Visa & documentation

Your school initiates the visa process once a position is confirmed. For the UK, this may include Skilled Worker visa sponsorship. For China, we guide you through the Z visa process.

5

You arrive

Before departure we prepare you fully — documentation, what to expect, and connections to teachers who have already made the same move.

Questions
answered directly.

No. China placements do not require prior teaching experience. You need an undergraduate bachelor's degree (any field), a valid passport, and a police clearance certificate. This makes China a strong entry point for newly qualified teachers or those looking to gain international experience before moving to more competitive markets.
QTS stands for Qualified Teacher Status. It is the legal requirement to teach in most state-funded schools in England. South African teachers obtain QTS through UK ENIC — the national agency for international qualifications. The process involves two steps: first, you apply for a Statement of Comparability from UK ENIC (which confirms your SA degree is equivalent to a UK Level 6 qualification), then you apply for QTS through the professional recognition route. Since August 2025, the QTS application itself is free. Eduplace guides you through the entire process. Read our full QTS guide here.
Typically no — for both China and the UK. Unlike Middle East placements where airfare is usually part of the package, teachers heading to these markets generally arrange and fund their own travel. This is one of the key differences between these markets and the Gulf. The overall opportunity — whether it is China's low entry barrier or the UK's long-term career value — is weighed differently.
The UK uses the Skilled Worker visa system. Your employer (the school) must sponsor you, and the role must meet certain salary and skill thresholds. This is different from Middle East work visas, which are employer-initiated but follow a different administrative process. The good news: schools in England can and do sponsor Skilled Worker visas for qualified teachers. Eduplace connects you with schools that are set up to sponsor and actively looking for SA teachers.
Yes. Always. This service is entirely free for teachers. There is no application fee, no placement charge, and no hidden costs at any stage. Eduplace is funded entirely by the schools and institutions we work with. You pay nothing — ever.
